about

Irish Folk Ballad
Down by the Salley Gardens" (Gort na Saileán) is a poem first published by Irish author W. B. Yeats in 1889 in "The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems" . In 1909 Herbert Hughes set the music to the Irish traditional The Moorlough Shore (also known as "The Maids of Mourne Shore"), and though there are other musical settings this is the most famous and as this it is in the Public Domain and I encouraged myself to do this cover as I do love W. B. Yeats as a writer. This is my rendition to this popular traditional Irish song

lyrics

Poem by William B. Yeats

Down by the Salley gardens my love and I did meet;
She passed the Salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.*

In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.
